A Brief History of the Sayers OLD COUNTRY KITCHEN


1946 - Art and Dick Sayler begin operating the original Old Country Kitchen at 103rd and Stark. The original restaurant seated 60 with 4 employees. That first year, we served 17,000 dinners.

1948 - The Sayler Brothers introduce a new menu with steak dinners sized by the ounce and the 72 oz. Steak Dinner Challenge.

1951 - The concept is so successful that the restaurant moves to its present location at 105th and S.E. Stark, doubling the seating capacity.

1976 -
Popularity through the ‘50s and ‘60s required additions and remodelings. Seating 300, with 90 employees we served 348,000 dinners — a record in the old building.

1978 - Early morning hours of January 23, 1978: Old Country Kitchen burns to the ground. By September 1, we had built the present Eastside restaurant and reopened. By the end of 1979, we set a new record of 357,000 dinners.

1983 - The Beaverton Old Country Kitchen opens with the same menu and service as our original location and it is soon thriving.

1986 - Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen named one of “Top 100 Restaurants in the U.S.” by Restaurants and Institutions magazine.

1989 and 1985 - Winner of the KEX Radio Listener Survey as “Best Steak House In Portland”.

1991 - Ranked number one hundred of the top five hundred independent restaurants nationally by Restaurant & Hospitality magazine.

1996 - Our 50th Anniversary.
